Awakening is a large scale interactive steel sculpture of a human head and two hands emerging from the ground. The head and hands are 20ft tall and the hands are placed an “arms” length away from the head with palms facing inward, as if the giant being is looking at its hands for the first time.
Black Rock Lighthouse at dusk
A crystal like cluster of Lighthouses ranging from 6 to 60 foot tall and some leaning as much as 20 degrees. At night the Lighthouses truly came alive with fire, light, and a few other surprises. A couple of times I thought I had the wrong burn time and was watching it go up!
Dragon car on playa
This car roams around, handing out joy to those who see it. And if you have good timing, you might even catch flames coming from its mouth (true story!)
Larry Harvey as robot
This sculpture of Larry Harvey was approximately 8ft tall, 5-1/2 ft wide and weighed 3-4 tons. The bust included robot gears and mechanical works reflecting Larry's last designated theme for Burning Man 2018, "I Robot."
The Bijou in deep playa

El Pulpo Mechanico lights up the night
One of my favourites every year is "El Pulpo". A combination of art and technology melded together, it built knowing that it would be fun to watch as the giant cam spun up through the center moving the tentacles and eyes in and out while fire spewed from the tentacles and head. No hydraulics or computers were used in this contraption. It was built primarily out of recycled and used junk found from a local scrap yard.
Time for bubbles
As the blue hour draws to a close this little burner spreads her wings
Dusk on the playa
Mushrooms and lovers as dusk sets in on another great day at Burning Man
Burning Man 2013
This is an alternate image to one of my favourites from this year. I often go back and look through the hundreds of different images captured, to see if maybe I should share and not keep them to myself. This one was shot on my little pocket camera!
Deep playa break
Take a load off and rest up for the ride
This dude was 104 feet tall so you can imagine the blazing fire and flames on burn night. Crazy! This was our first burn and we were simply giddy.
This art installation was by Jessica Levine. The description on BurningMan.org: Her roots correlate with all of the deepest parts of ourselves–the buried parts, which make us who we are. Exposing the roots and making them a part of the blossom at the top represents the idea that everything is an integral part of the whole self, even (and especially) the buried parts–not just the pretty flowery surface parts.
Dust to dust, to dust
The man rises from a dust storm, with the promise of blue sky
Theodora 2048 - The Robot Bride
This is one of my favourites from 2018 by artist xing zhang.
A simple, rusted, tree. An elegant, shiny, human form. Technology and nature can clash, collide, or evolve — the interpretation of our future can be as diverse, and graceful, as we want it to be. Art by Alex McLean
